RV PARK GEO GUIDE

Bing Webmaster Tools: ten minutes that open ChatGPT and Copilot.

Ask a room of park owners who has verified their site with Bing and nobody raises a hand. Ask who wants to be found by ChatGPT and everyone does. Those are the same question. It takes ten minutes.

IN ONE PARAGRAPH

Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free equivalent of Google Search Console. Verifying your site there tells Bing to crawl it fully and keep it current, and lets you submit a sitemap and see what Bing has indexed. Since ChatGPT and Copilot search Bing, this is the step that makes a park findable to them. Unverified sites are crawled slowly and shallowly or not at all. The process: sign in at bing.com/webmasters, add the site, verify, import from Google Search Console if you have it, submit the sitemap, and claim Bing Places for the map listing. Then check back in a month to see what Bing indexed.

Step by step

  1. Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in with a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account. Use one the park owns.
  2. Choose "Import from Google Search Console" if the site is already verified there. It copies the verification and the sitemap in one step. Otherwise add the site by address.
  3. If verifying manually, pick the meta tag option and paste the tag into the site's head, or the DNS option if you manage DNS. Your web company can do either.
  4. Submit the sitemap: yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
  5. Go to bingplaces.com and claim the park's listing, or import it from the Business Profile. Make the name, address, and phone match exactly.
  6. Come back in two to four weeks. Under Site Explorer, see which pages Bing indexed. Under Search Performance, see what Bing searches you appeared for.

What one looks like

Before: a search for "Cedar Bend RV Park" on bing.com returns a directory listing, a Yelp page, and no park site, because the site was never verified and Bing crawled two pages of it in 2022. Ask ChatGPT for a park near Lava Hot Springs with 50 amp: it names two parks in Pocatello. After verification and the sitemap: three weeks later, bing.com shows the park's site first with its pages listed; ask ChatGPT the same question and Cedar Bend, all twenty sites of it, is named with a link to the sites page. Nothing on the site changed.

What to check afterward

  • Indexed pages. Should match the sitemap. Missing pages usually mean a noindex or a crawl block.
  • Crawl errors. Same fixes as Google's: status codes, redirects.
  • Bing Places. Category, hours, photos, same as the Business Profile. Alexa reads this.
  • Search performance. Bing's queries are a different, older-skewing audience, and it includes the ChatGPT-driven fetches.

What it looks like when it is missing

The park is well indexed by Google, ranks on page one there, and is nowhere in Bing. Gemini names it. ChatGPT and Copilot name the competitors. The owner has heard that AI is the future and has no idea the fix is a free form.

How to check your own

  1. Search your park's name and your town plus RV park on bing.com. Note whether your site appears.
  2. Sign in to bing.com/webmasters and see whether the site is there.
  3. Ask ChatGPT for a park in your town with two of your features.

What we do about it

Every site we build is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places on launch day, under the park's own account with us added, with the sitemap submitted. We check the indexed page count monthly alongside Google's. Once you are findable, be readable: next.

Questions about this.

Is Bing Webmaster Tools free?

Yes. It is Microsoft's free tool for site owners, equivalent to Google Search Console.

Why does Bing matter for an RV park?

ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot search Bing's index. A site not verified and indexed there is invisible to those assistants. Alexa also uses Bing.

Can I import my Google Search Console verification into Bing?

Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools offers a one-click import from Google Search Console that copies verification and the sitemap.

How long after verifying does Bing index my site?

Usually two to four weeks for a full crawl. Submitting the sitemap speeds it up, and the tool shows which pages are indexed.
